Bill Hooten -
It wouldn't be Cowboy Poetry night without local celebrity poet Bill Hooten, who hasn't missed many of the Red Bluff Cowboy Poetry events in the past 30 years. Hooten is a retired veterinarian and also considers himself a part-time cowboy, so has a lot experiences to share his well-crafted and witty western verses. Hooten has performed at the State Theatre with Dave Stamey and at many other Cowboy Poet events.

I have been involved in the horse and cattle industry most of my life raising, training and competing on horses and raising and showing Brangus cattle. Past member of the Redding Rodeo Association and C.M. Russell Stampede Rodeo in Judith Basin, MT. Got started writing cowboy poetry in 1993 when a veterinarian friend loaned me a copy of "A Rider, A Roper and A Helluva Windmill Man," by Baxter Black. Performed in gatherings in CA, OR, NV, ID and MT.

I moved to the West… well from Arizona to California which is technically west but Arizona is technically more western so maybe visa versa. My wife encouraged me to write more and I said I would if she painted more. She painted a whole bunch of great stuff so here I am.

I've always wanted to be a cowgirl. Poetry is part of the dream. I ride the back country but this poem comes from working with a mule trainer.

I have been writing poetry since grade school. My first published poem appeared in my college paper entitled Have you ever sat on a cold commode. I have poems published and won 3 poetry awards. I attended my first Round Up when I was 8 years old and have loved the rodeo ever since. My cousin was a champion barrel racer at a young age maybe 22. I have helped round up cattle for branding at age 14. Was engaged to a champion bull rider at age 15. Just have a love for the way of the west.
